How I Got This Shot: My original intention Sunday morning (October 6) was to shoot a sunrise at Black Balsam then mill about Graveyard Fields, but fog and clouds engulfed Black Balsam, so I decided to drive down the Parkway a bit further to Looking Glass Rock overlook and try to salvage something. Luckily I arrived just in time for the rising sun to peek over the distant cloud line. I used a graduated neutral density filter to hold back the sky and balance the exposure. I set the hard edge of the filter along the cloud line. The shutter speed (1/15) dictated my use of a tripod in shooting this scene. In composing it, I placed the sun at upper middle left with Looking Glass Rock at lower middle right, providing opposite points of focus with the nearby foliage giving a nice foreground.
