It offers beautiful sunsets and long-range views of Torrey Ridge and the Shenandoah Valley to the west.

How I Got This Shot: Raven’s Roost is one of the most amazing overlooks on the parkway. I knew in advance I wanted the tree as a silhouette in my capture. I positioned the tree to the right of my image so it wouldn’t take away from the amazing clouds. I used a 30″ exposure to bring the rocks to life and a graduated nd filter to keep the colors in the sky. I positioned the camera, filters, and let God’s handy work speak for itself.

How I Got This Shot

I used a 10-stop neutral density filter to attenuate the light and allow a long exposure (10s of seconds) despite it being the middle of the day. The resulting movement of the clouds during the exposure creating the soft texture which I wanted to contrast the rocks below. Needless to say, having a good solid tripod was essential.
