How I Got This Shot: During the early morning hours the Blue Ridge Parkway is fairly empty, which makes it easy to stand in the middle of the road! PLEASE USE CAUTION, when doing this and LISTEN for cars. When it is quite, you can hear a car coming at quite a distance away. When you are concentrating on things like settings, focus and composition, we tend to become myopically focused on what we are doing and forget that we are in the middle of the street!! Use your judgement about this and please be keenly aware.

TIP: In terms of composition, I leave out the sky, in many of my landscape images like this, as it makes for a stronger visual impact. Of course if the sky is part of the story then you must include it. But remember that when composing, if it does not ADD to the image, it takes away from the image!

How I Got This Shot: I’ve always been captivated by the stonework of the tunnels on the Parkway. One recent evening, I took a short walk from a nearby overlook to the Fryingpan Tunnel to capture the autumn color against the stone. I stopped down to f/22 to set up for a long exposure that would add a dynamic sense of motion to the cars that passed by.
