When the skies are gloomy down in the North Carolina mountains, you’ll more than likely find me standing in a forest stream or at the base of a waterfall. But after a day of waterfalling I like to at least try and catch some kind of a sunset on my way back to the hotel. No matter how thick the clouds are, you can almost always count on something unfolding that will make for a nice shot, whether the sun shows itself or not. On this evening, I stopped off at the parking area for the Mt. Pisgah trailhead on the Blue Ridge Parkway. I like this spot because it’s easy and gives nice westward views of Cold Mountain and Mt. Pisgah in the same shot, if you choose to frame it that way. While standing there behind my camera and tripod, I was joined by a man and wife who had just driven down the parkway from Asheville in hopes of catching a sunset as well. Well as it turned out, we never did see the sun, but I wasn’t that disappointed, since there was constant low hanging cloud cover blowing through the area, creating all kinds of interest for a nice photograph. I even saw some color off in the sky as the thick clouds would part for a minute or two. As the couple started to back out of the parking lot, I overheard the husband say to his wife, ” Well we drove all that way for nothing!” It just goes to show, beauty is definitely in the eye of the beholder.

How I Got This Shot: I set the camera on a tripod in manual mode and took two exposures, one on the foreground and one on the sky. I combined them using Photomatix software in exposure fusion mode.

I set up at the Mt. Pisgah parking lot in hopes of getting a sunset behind Cold Mt. Unfortunately I didn’t see the sun this evening or for basically the whole weekend. But there were numerous yellow cone flowers in the foreground, which did add some interest to the shot.

How I Got This Shot: I set the camera up on a tripod,set exposure to manual,set aperture at F/11, and bumped the ISO to 400 so I could shoot at a somewhat faster shutter speed so I could compensate for the foliage blowing in the foreground. I liked the cone flowers in the foreground as well as the low hanging clouds sitting just above Cold Mountain.

Captured Aug 16th 2013 from the Blue Ridge Parkway. As the last few minutes of the day drifted away – I stole a few of it’s remaining sky art!

How I Got This Shot: “Dirty Low Down”
Captured last night Aug 16th 2013 from the Blue Ridge Parkway. I made this shot laying on the ground to gain a very LOW DOWN perspective and I wanted to shoot through the brush that was not more then 18″ -24″ tall. Earlier in the day I heard the song Dirty Low Down, by Boz Scaggs, and it stuck with me all day so I could not resist naming this one Dirty Low Down! That is the fog rolling in on the upper left from Mt. Pisgah! And it was moving fast.

Shot with my Sigma 10-20 lens at 10mm, 1/80 sec at f/16, ISO 640. This is one image, processed 100% in LR5. Shooting wide is super for landscapes!
