How I Got This Shot: While shooting the Milky Way from Ridge Junction Overlook, I decided to play around with a bit of light painting. I set the camera up on tripod with a remote cable release, and during the 30 second exposure I hit the Mt. Mitchell park sign with about 5-10 seconds of light from a small headband mountain light that I use for trail running and in red mode for photographing at night.

It took quite a few tries to get the light to cover the sign but not too much in the grass below or on the trees beyond.

This frame had the light in the right places, but was a bit dark so I boosted the exposure by +1.00 and then altered the whites and blacks in order to bring out the lettering. Some other tweaks were made as well.

30 seconds is a bit too long, especially on a windy night so the result isn’t as sharp as I would have liked, but the color balance is nice.

The brightest “star” to the right of the Milky Way is Mars.

“The Light” The light was captured in July, 2013. It was my hopes in capturing a beautiful sunset. The clouds started rolling in and it started to sprinkle and I began packing up my gear. Then, the sun rays broke through the clouds and was followed by a beautiful saturated sky.

Though taken a couple months ago the red & green hues out of this foggy fall scene at the Mt. Mitchell overlook along the Parkway fit with the color tones of the Christmas season.

How I Got This Shot: With the fog setting in thick on Mt. Mitchell we decided to drive back down the mountain in hopes of getting below the changing weather. We pulled in to the Mt. Mitchell over look and much to our delight the thick blanket of gray was subtly infiltrated by the sun on the mountain side in the distance. This shot was taken hand held just to the right of the overlook sign. The foliage was rich in color along the bank and used it to frame the scene and bring out the patches of red and orange in the distance against the gray tones of the sky.
