Stitched together several shots to create this panorama of clouds moving over Mt. Mitchell on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Within only a few minutes you couldn’t see 100 yards in front of you!

“Mountain Dream” – The rising sun lights up this dreamy scene taken from the Blue Ridge Parkway near the entrance to Mt. Mitchell.

Filters: 3 stop and 2 stop Grad ND’s

How I Got This Shot

This image was taken right beside the road along the Parkway near entrance to Mt. Mitchell. I wanted to use a long exposure to smooth out the clouds that were rolling down the Black Mountain Range. I used my 3 stop Grad ND filter as a regular ND filter here, I slid it all the way down in the holder to have the dark part completely cover the lens then I used a 2 stop Grad ND filter to control the highlights in the sky. I also stopped my lens down to f/22 and dropped my ISO speed to 50 to get a 6 second exposure. A sturdy tripod and cable release were also key factors in getting a good clean image.

How I Got This Shot

I arrived at the entrance to Mount Mitchell for sunrise at a favorite spot, only to find it overgrown. I hopped back in my car and headed further North until I found these pretty Rose Bay Rhodies, which I used as a foreground element for my shot.
