How I Got This Shot: We started out our morning well before the sun came up in search of a vibrant sunrise with some fall foliage. We were greeted with cold rain and fog so solid you couldn’t see a few feet ahead of you. We ended up heading to Pisgah Inn for breakfast and then over to Graveyard Fields to see how the color was coming along. This is the scene we were greeted with, Graveyard Fields is currently at peak color. We pulled over on the side of the road and I set up my tripos, kept my lens partially covered with a cloth and took a few images.

How I Got This Shot: This was taken at Graveyard Fields, but it was a little off the trail. I missed the header to get onto the loop and ended up hiking basically up the hill, where you can see the entire valley and the parking lot. It’s an amazing view for getting shots of the trees and the landscape as a whole. I liked the contrast between the dead tree and its more imposing look and the greens and reds behind it. This was handheld, as most of my photography is when I hike.

How I Got This Shot: The Ursids came at a perfect time this year – clear, not to cold, and a less than half moon in the southern sky. As the Ursids radiant point is the North Star (Ursa Minor) I thought I could point the camera northward and not have too much interference from the moonlight. I chose Graveyard Fields because it offers a great N-NW view and the ridge-lines (Graveyard and Ivestor) offer a good foreground. I got really lucky and caught this fireball just after 4AM shooting towards Black Balsam.

How I Got This Shot: Gathering clouds flattened the light which led me to look for abstracts and isolated shots of scenes where there was a variety of light, colors and tones. I loved this scene because of the contrasts between the blooms on the trees and the much darker pines. Only in this type of flattened light conditions could I preserve both the highlights of the blooms and the darkness of the pines.

Sunday Fun at Second Falls – I captured this today, September 29 2013, at Graveyard Fields. This shot you get from the roadside. Color is getting near peak. Probably another week we will be there at Graveyard Fields!

Camera: Canon 5D MKII
Lens: 70-200 f/4L IS USM + 1.4
Focal Length: 98mm
ISO: 100
Shutter: 1.6 sec
Aperture: f/32
Filters: Variable Neutral Density Filter at 8 stops & Circular polarizer
Exposure: manual
How I Got This Shot: I shot this from the roadside just before you get to Graveyard Fields if coming form Asheville. I used a circular polarizer and an 8 stop variable neutral density filter. The color is getting near peak at Graveyard Fields but it is always the first to turn. In my opinion, it is better then what I witnessed last year – probably all the rain over the summer, as we had a record rainfall going back for 70 years! If we continue with warm days and cool nights with no crazy wind storms we will be in for a super fall season here in the Smoky Mountains In WNC! Woohooo!!
