How I Got This Shot: Get up early! If you want a shot like this, that’s step number one. I hiked up Rough Ridge while it was still dark out to get an idea of where I wanted shoot. Then, then the sun came up, I was able to move around to various spots and come away with more keepers by getting there early, rather than figuring it out as the sun was rising.
A Reverse ND Grad was used to balance the exposure between the sky and foreground. Simply turn on live view, position it, and release the shutter. As always when shooting landscapes, I was on a tripod, used a shutter release cable, lowest ISO, and locked up the mirror to ensure the sharpest photo possible.
A small aperture (large number) ensured focus front of the scene to the back and a pleasing “starburst”.
