How I Got This Shot: Taken on Friday 10/18/13 at sunset from the Cowee Overlook. As the sun began to set, a fog bank rolled in and foiled any plans of creating more traditional sunset shots that evening. Rather than pack it in, I pulled out my long lens and look for small areas of the landscape that was being bathed in the wonderful, warm diffused light caused by the combination of the setting sun and fast moving fog.

How I Got This Shot: As I drive along the Parkway, I like to look for these little pockets of fog that gather in the valleys and try to capture the drama of what happens as the low angled sun begins to burn them off. It’s part of what makes early morning photography so special. Open eyes and a long lens are all it takes to capture some great moments.

How I Got This Shot: I’ve always been captivated by the stonework of the tunnels on the Parkway. One recent evening, I took a short walk from a nearby overlook to the Fryingpan Tunnel to capture the autumn color against the stone. I stopped down to f/22 to set up for a long exposure that would add a dynamic sense of motion to the cars that passed by.

How I Got This Shot

This image was captured shortly after sunrise standing at the Pounding Mill overlook. Patience was key on the hazy summer morning as the sun was behind the clouds as it came up and stayed there for quite awhile until it briefly emerged and cast warm light on the fog that ha settled into the valley below. I chose a low horizon to compose the shot to showcase the drama in the sky above and balance out the drama on the ground.
