This was the Super Moon the night of July 13, 2014 around 10PM. Drove up to the parkway (near Balsam, NC) and although it was too cloudy, I could see a bit of brightness behind the clouds. I stopped and patiently waited for about 20 minutes and it finally came out for a very short time. It sure was quite an experience to stand in front of it in the parkway’s quietness and peace…

How I Got This Shot: This image was captured from the Blue Ridge Parkway near Balsam Gap. It was quite challenging to get an appropriate exposure that would allow me to get both the clouds and the moon with some of its details. If I exposed for the clouds, the mood would be totally burned and look like a big white hole instead. If I set the exposure for the moon details, then the clouds would just disappear and it would have been another picture of the moon in a black background which I also love but, for this one, I really wanted to capture what I saw and not what the camera thought I was seeing:-) So, I took two exposures ( one for the clouds and one for the moon) and layered them using Perfect Layers from OnOne Software’s Perfect Photo Suite 8. The result is exactly what I was standing in front of. Thanks!

Location: Blue Ridge Parkway (Balsam Gap)
Winter storm in Balsam NC. I live near this section of the parkway so I went out for a walk to check out the roads condition. I kept walking towards the parkway and found out no one had been around except for a few coyotes maybe and me! The view was just stunning; glad I happened to have the camera in my backpack!
