How I Got This Shot: At 8:15 PM, the Sun was just a few minutes from going down. I looked up the trail and decided that it made for a better composition than the sunset. If you look closely, in the shadows, you can see the last few hikers of the coming back to their cars. Tripod used and stopped down to f16 to keep both the fore and background in focus.

How I Got This Shot: Hiked from the Grandfather Mountain bridge parking lot. Lots of hikers out on a nice day. I was across from McRae Peak. Hikers ascend a 15 foot ladder to make the final few steps to the top boulder. I was shooting from the “Attic Window” location for this shot.

How I Got This Shot: I was coming back from Linville Falls on the parkway towards Boone. Saw this scene from the road with the great lighting and immediately pulled over to the shoulder. Waited for the traffic to clear and took a series of about 10 pictures of various exposures. Hand held, but with Optical Steadyshot turned on.

How I Got This Shot: Short 5 minute hike to the outlook about 30 minutes before sunset. About 10 minutes after the sun had set, the sky lit up with these vibrant colors.

Flat Rock Overlook is the trailhead of a leisurely 0.6-mile self-guiding loop trail. The overlook is on the west side of Grandmother Mountain and has spectacular views of Grandfather Mountain and the Linville Valley.
