After a cloudless uneventful sunrise at the site of the former Buck Spring lodge down in the North Carolina mountains, I wandered over to the trail head for the Shut In trail to look around for a bit. Soon I happened upon this little stone bench with the sun peeking through the treetops and really found the view from here quite appealing. I couldn’t help but think what a welcome sight this bench must have been for many weary travelers along these mountain ridges.
Location: Mount Pisgah Shut In Trail – Milepost 407.6
Camera: Nikon D90
Lens: Nikkor VR 18-105mm F/3.5-5.6G
Focal Length: 18mm
ISO: 100
Shutter: 5 exposures from 1 second to 1/350 second
Aperture: F/22
Filters: none
Exposure: Manual
How I Got This Shot: I wanted to get a nice sunburst effect with the sun filtering through the trees to the left. I set the aperture at F/22 to achieve this and shot multiple exposures in manual mode with the camera on a tripod. I then combined exposures in Photomatix software to compensate for the high contrast in the scene. I try to avoid HDR for the most part in shooting landscapes but felt it worked best in this situation.
