Flat Rock Sunset, Milepost 308.2

by Dave LoSapio

"Flat Rock Sunset, Milepost 308.2" by Dave LoSapio

Date Taken: 10/23/2015
Location: Flat Rock Trail
Sunset capture at the summit of Flat Rock Trail, Milepost 308.2 on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Late Fall foliage illuminated by a warm setting sun.

Camera: Canon 5D Mark III
Lens: Canon EF 16-35 f/2.8 L II
Focal Length: 20
ISO: 250
Shutter: .3 sec
Aperture: f/22
Filters: Lee Circular
Exposure: Manual
How I Got This Shot: I arrived at the summit just as the sun was beginning its descent into the horizon line. There were a few other photographers already here so I moved to a location out of their way and this was the best available composition. The sky was just “ok” so I chose to use an aperture that would create a sunstar. The Fall foliage in the Linville Valley below was well past peak and very thin but the colors of what remained was were beautifully accentuated by the warmth of the setting sun.

A Lee Filters Circular Polarizer was used but more for a touch of ND effect than polarization since I was facing directly into the sun. I also used a remote trigger release to eliminate camera shake.
