βHe’s of the colour of the nutmeg. And of the heat of the ginger…. he is pure air and fire; and the dull elements of earth and water never appear in him, but only in patient stillness while his rider mounts him; he is indeed a horse, and all other jades you may call beasts.β
β William Shakespeare, Henry V
In between trying to balance busy teenagers and careers, my husband and I try to venture every chance we get. Though we live in Southwest Virginia we typically roam in the Smoky Mountains or travel the area around Asheville and the Blue Ridge Parkway. This past Friday we decided to spend our day here in our own backyard. Grayson Highlands State Park, located in Mouth of Wilson, VA has miles of hiking trails, including access to the AT as well as the privilege of sharing the hills with these majestic creatures.

How I Got This Shot: With all the snow our area has received lately the park services has been assisting the ponies in their search for food by placing large round bales of hay for them along the trails. It didn’t take us long to find to find these beauties. We entered in through the gate and followed the tractor tracks straight to these beauties. Their long coats show the brutality of the elements with ice hanging from their mains.
