"Craggy Pinnacle, Milepost 364" by Solitary Traveler Photography

Date Taken: 10/12/2014
Location: Craggy Pinnacle, milepost 364
A photogenic tree accented with fall foliage and fog along the trail to Craggy Pinnacle, milepost 364

Camera: Nikon D7000
Lens: Tokina AT-X Pro 12-24
Focal Length: 14mm (equivalent to 21mm full frame)
ISO: 200
Shutter: 1/100
Aperture: f/9
Filters: none
Exposure: Manual
How I Got This Shot: This much-photographed tree along the trail to the peak of Craggy Pinnacle has always been intriguing to me, and I wanted to give my own take on it when conditions warranted. Of course, those conditions needed to be just right, and Sunday’s foggy, damp weather fit what I had envisioned – the fog and fall foliage gave the resulting image a mystical, magical feel. Since the tree is literally on top of the trail, I needed space to capture it, and only a super-wide angle lens would allow me to capture the full extent of its sprawling branches (I shot at 14mm, equivalent to 21mm on a full frame camera). I stood on the opposite end of the trail, using a tripod and remote shutter, manually focusing and shooting “mirror up” to help maintain image sharpness. I boosted my ISO speed to 200 to allow for a faster shutter (1/100 second) to “freeze” the leaves in case the winds picked up and rustled them.
