How I Got This Shot: This shot was all about the composition, and that depends on the season. In summer, I’ll move in front of the pond and zoom in on the mill and its reflection in the water. When the rhododendron are in bloom, I’ll stand off to the right side and include the blooms as a focal point. In autumn, I stand back even more, placing the mill on the left, with the colorful foliage serving as a counterpoint on the right. Unfortunately, there’s an unsightly small dirt island in the middle of the pond, so I tried to minimize that while maximizing the focus on the foliage. I also added a subtle vignetting in Lightroom – something I rarely do anymore – to add a vintage feel to the image.
