"Waterrock Knob Sunset" by Deborah Scannell Photography

Photo By: Deborah Scannell Photography,  Asheville Nature Landscape Photographer

Location: Waterrock Knob – Milepost 451

This image was captured at Waterrock Knob during my recent Workshop. This image is a sunset during our recent Super Moon event. This particular evening was June 22 and technically the day prior to the official super moon. It was a magical night as we shared the sunset on the west portion of the plateau and the super moon rising on the east side of Waterrock Knob. Everyone that attended truly enjoyed the spectacular event.

Camera: Canon 5D MKII

Lens: Ef24-105 f/4L IS USM

ISO: 200

Aperture: f/18

Shutter: 1/40

Exposure: AV

Focal Length: 24mm

How I Got This Shot

I knew I wanted the leading road in the right quadrant of the shot and so I framed the scene to include both tree’s which helped frame the setting sun. The dynamic display of shadow and light produced by the sun and cloud position created a stunning scene. I made a tutorial video of my workflow of this image which can be purchased on my blog. I uploaded the image to my facebook page the next day and decided to have my fans name it. Thanks to Melissa Hall, the resulting name is “Yin and Yang”. Perfect name and so it is “Yin & Yang”.

I always use a tripod for landscape work and a cable release whenever possible. This ensures my resulting image is sharp. I did not use a polarizer or graduated neutral density filter, for this image, due to the amount of clouds, however, I normally do and I suggest it if the scene dictates it. I use my neutral graduated density filter if the sky is very bright and the foreground is not. This will help you equal out the dynamic lighting conditions and capture a better exposed image in the camera and less post production work.
